Grow your own sweetcorn

May 31, 2012

One of the best treats of late summer are glistening cobs of sweetcorn packed with sun kissed sweet goodness. Slather some butter on top and sprinkle some salt and you're ready to bite down into one of the best treats you can have for summer. To ensure the best taste and freshness, try growing your own sweetcorn instead of picking it up at the grocery. Store-bought sweetcorn can be dicey since your chances of getting dry and stale corn can be quite high depending on when you visit your neighborhood grocery. Not only do sweetcorn make for great summertime eating, they also make for great border plants. They add an exotic look to any garden.

To get started, fill seed trays with general-purpose compost. Plant one seed in each tray. Don't push the corn seed to far down. Plant them just beneath the surface of the compost. Water the seed well. Don't transfer your seedlings after they have sprouted, wait until their roots have touched the seed tray's base. Keep the tray well-watered before you transplant. Prepare the transplant bed well by turning over the sod. Plant each seedling with its compost. Just make sure the compost is level with the existing surface of the soil. Remember to plan sweetcorn in blocks instead of rows since these plants are pollinated by the wind. Alternatively, you can grow sweet corn in containers. Just use multi-purpose compost. Container-raised sweet corn makes any container garden look more attractive.
