July 2, 2012 Irises produce beautiful blossoms. However, their root networks can easily get congested as your plants mature. In turn, the congested roots inhibit your plants' blossoms. So if you would like to ensure the same or a higher amount of nice irises, follow these steps on dividing your plants' rhizomes to maximize rooting space.
Step 1: using a fork, dig up congested clumps. Carefully take them out of the soil. Make sure not to tear or cut into the rhizomes.
Step 2: slowly pull the clumped up rhizomes apart. Do this by hand If it's too hard, use a knife to cut them loose. Separate the rhizomes that are healthy-these are the ones with leaves. Throw away the rest.
Step 3: thin out the leaves of the rhizomes you wish to plant to minimize wind resistance.
Step 4: replant the rhizomes spaced out at a rate of 12cm apart. Make sure the leaves are facing the sun.
Lift out and replant your rhizomes every three years or so.
