4 Tips on Growing Your Own Food

July 16, 2012

If you've ever wondered how that sandwich you're holding in your hand ever came to be or where its ingredients came from, you may be embarking on a personal path that leads to you growing your own food. In this day and age, modern technology has greatly distanced people from an intimate understanding of where their food comes from. This is part and parcel of our alienation from our natural roots. Learning to grow your own food is a great way to reconnect with Mother Nature and gain some semblance of control over something very personal-your diet. In this day and age of mechanized farming, synthetic food, and all sorts of artificial arrangements, it is a distinctive personal achievement to grow and consumer your own food on your own terms and schedule. Talk about the ultimate in personal choice!

If you're ready to take the first step in greater personal food autonomy, follow the initial steps below to growing your own food. Choose your location – keep in mind that vegetables need sunshine for at least six hours in a day. Find a sunny spot. Do some soil testing. Either use a soil testing kit or bring in a soil sample to your agricultural extension service. Build your garden beds. You can raise beds using mounds of coconuts, stone, wood, and any other non-toxic materials. Make sure the beds get enough drainage. Add the soil. Buy loam-a combination of soil and organic materials. Make sure it is well-areated and is loose. Check its pH. You are now ready to start planting!
